The short answer
- Choose Grammarly if most of your writing is everyday professional or online text: emails, blog posts, client docs, social posts. You want fast, low-friction corrections and rewrites wherever you type.
- Choose ProWritingAid if you write long-form work, especially fiction or book-length non-fiction, and want deep style reports and manuscript-level feedback.
- Skip both if you only need basic spelling and grammar fixes. Both have free tiers that may be enough.
These tools look similar on a feature checklist but are built for different jobs. Grammarly polishes communication. ProWritingAid works more like an editing coach for longer, more crafted writing.

What each tool actually is
Grammarly is a writing assistant that runs in your browser, desktop apps, and many web apps. It checks spelling, grammar, and clarity as you type. The paid Pro plan adds full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, fluency suggestions, plagiarism and AI-text detection, and a larger allowance of generative AI prompts: 2,000 per member per month on Pro versus 100 on Free, according to Grammarly's plans page. Grammarly renamed its old "Premium" tier to Pro. Existing Premium subscribers who switch get a prorated refund, and Pro also includes team features that used to be Business-only.
ProWritingAid is a grammar checker plus a large set of editing reports aimed at writers who care about style: overused words, sentence variety, pacing, readability, and more. In recent years it has leaned into fiction and book-writing features. These include Chapter Critique (instant feedback on a short story or single chapter), Story Canvas (feedback on a story idea before you write), and paid Story Credits for manuscript-wide tools: Manuscript Analysis, Plot Analysis, Character Analysis, Virtual Beta Reader, and Marketability Analysis.
Head-to-head
1. Everyday editing and ease of use
Grammarly's strength is that you barely have to think about it. Suggestions appear inline wherever you write, and you accept or dismiss them with a click. For bloggers drafting in a CMS, writing client emails, or posting on LinkedIn, that matters more than having dozens of reports.
ProWritingAid also offers inline checks, but it shines when you deliberately sit down to edit: run a report, study the patterns in your prose, and revise. That workflow is slower, and it's more rewarding if you're trying to improve as a writer rather than just ship clean text.
Edge: Grammarly for speed and low friction.
2. Depth of style feedback
This is ProWritingAid's home turf. On paid plans you get unlimited line-editing report runs and "advanced style improvements". The free plan limits each line-editing report to two runs per day. If you want to know that you start too many sentences the same way, or that your dialogue tags are repetitive, ProWritingAid gives you more ways to see it.
Grammarly's feedback is more about clarity, correctness, and tone. It's very good at "make this sentence clearer" and less focused on chapter-scale craft.
Edge: ProWritingAid.
3. AI writing and rewriting
Both now include generative AI. Grammarly Pro advertises one-click full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, and 2,000 AI prompts per member per month. ProWritingAid's free plan includes 10 Rephrases per day, 3 "Sparks" (AI tools to experiment with and develop your writing), and 3 "Creative Nudges" for writer's block. Paid plans make Rephrases unlimited and raise the other limits.
For marketing and business writing, Grammarly's tone controls are the more practical tool. For creative writers who want help getting unstuck without the AI writing the story for them, ProWritingAid's nudge-style features fit better.
Edge: depends on use. Grammarly for business tone, ProWritingAid for creative development.
4. Long-form and book projects
ProWritingAid supports documents of any length on paid plans. Free accounts only get suggestions on 500 words at a time. It also has manuscript-level analysis (via Story Credits), which Grammarly doesn't try to offer. If you're working on a novel, ProWritingAid is the more natural fit. Note that Story Credits are an add-on purchase. Premium members get up to 40% off credits and Premium Pro members up to 65%, per ProWritingAid's pricing page.
Edge: ProWritingAid.
5. Originality checks
Grammarly Pro includes plagiarism detection and AI-generated-text detection. For freelancers who need to show clients their work is original, having both in the same tool is convenient. Treat any AI detector's output as a signal, not proof. These tools can produce false positives.
Edge: Grammarly, for convenience.
6. Teams and organizations
Grammarly has a clear team story: Pro includes team features such as style guides and brand tones (one of each on Pro), and Enterprise adds SSO, data loss prevention, BYOK encryption, and more. ProWritingAid is mainly built and priced for individual writers. Its licenses are per person, usable across your own computers but not shared.
Edge: Grammarly.
Pricing breakdown

Grammarly
- Free: $0. Basic spelling and grammar, tone detection, 100 AI prompts per month.
- Pro: $12 per member per month billed annually ($144/year). Grammarly's support center lists $30/month on monthly billing and $60 per quarter on quarterly billing. Grammarly offers a free trial on Pro and emails a reminder 2 days before it ends.

ProWritingAid
- Free: $0, with daily limits on reports, Rephrases, Sparks, and Creative Nudges, and a 500-words-at-a-time cap.
- Premium: $30/month billed monthly, or $120/year billed annually. ProWritingAid says annual saves 67% compared with monthly.
- Premium Pro: a higher tier with bigger limits on Sparks and Chapter Critique and the best Story Credit discounts. Check the pricing page for the current price.
- Story Credits: an add-on for manuscript-level analysis.
Value takeaway: on monthly billing the two cost the same ($30). On annual billing, ProWritingAid Premium ($120/year) is cheaper than Grammarly Pro ($144/year). If you don't need Grammarly's everywhere-you-type convenience or team features, ProWritingAid gives you more editing depth per dollar.
Refunds: ProWritingAid gives refunds on yearly or lifetime plans if you contact them within three days of purchase. Monthly plans aren't refundable. Read Grammarly's current terms before buying an annual plan.

Which one should you choose?
The blogger or content marketer: Grammarly. You write in many places (CMS, email, docs, social) and need speed, clarity, and tone control. Pair it with a good internal-linking and SEO workflow. Clean prose won't rank on its own.
The novelist or memoir writer: ProWritingAid. Chapter critiques, style reports, and manuscript analysis are built for you, and the annual price is lower.
The freelance writer with clients: Grammarly Pro is usually the safer pick because of plagiarism and AI-text detection and tone adjustments for client voice. If you mostly write long reports or ebooks, run them through ProWritingAid's reports too.
The student: start with the free plans. ProWritingAid offers a 25% discount for university and college students through Student Beans. It's also building a free program for schools.
The non-native English writer: Grammarly's fluency suggestions ("write fluently in English") are aimed squarely at you.
Alternatives worth considering
- QuillBot: best known for its paraphraser with 10+ modes, plus grammar checking and an AI detector. A good budget pick if rewording is your main need.
- LanguageTool: useful if you write in more than one language, since ProWritingAid is English-only.
- The built-in AI in your writing tool: Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Notion all ship their own AI features now. If you only need occasional rewrites, check what you already pay for first.
FAQ
Is Grammarly Pro the same as Grammarly Premium? Pro replaced Premium. According to Grammarly, Pro includes all of Premium's advanced writing features plus team features that used to be Business-only.
Does ProWritingAid work in languages other than English? No. ProWritingAid currently supports only English (general, US, UK, Australian, and Canadian).
Can I use both? Yes, and some writers do: Grammarly while drafting everywhere, ProWritingAid for a deep edit before publishing a long piece. For most people, one paid subscription is enough.
Which is better for SEO blog posts? Neither tool is an SEO tool. They improve readability and correctness, which helps readers, but they don't tell you what to cover or how to link your content. For that, browse our AI SEO tools category and our Surfer vs Frase comparison.
