ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity (2026): Which Paid AI Assistant Plan Is Worth It?

How we checked: we took plan names, prices, and billing rules from each company's official pricing page and help center on October 14, 2026 (sources at the end). We have no affiliate relationship with any of these three companies. All three change plans often, so check the linked pages before you pay.

The short answer

  • Pick ChatGPT if you want one app that does a bit of everything: chat, image creation, voice with video, deep research, and the Codex coding agent. It also has the cheapest paid entry point (Go at $8/month in the US).
  • Pick Claude if your work is long-form writing, document analysis, or coding. Claude Code is included on every paid plan, and Pro is the only plan of the three with a discount for paying annually ($17/month billed as $200 a year).
  • Pick Perplexity if most of what you ask is a research question where you want cited sources. Its paid plans let you pick which model answers, including models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
  • Stay on the free tiers if you only use AI a few times a week. All three free plans are generous enough for occasional use.

ChatGPT: the broadest feature set

OpenAI now sells three consumer subscriptions: Go, Plus, and Pro. According to OpenAI's Go announcement, Go is $8/month in the US (localized pricing in some markets), Plus is $20/month, and Pro starts at $100. The Pro help article lists three Pro tiers:

  • Pro 100 ($100/mo): about 5x Plus usage
  • Pro 200 ($200/mo): about 20x Plus usage
  • Pro 500 ($500/mo): adds "Ultrafast" versions of the top models

What each tier adds, per the pricing page:

  • Free: unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-6 Luna, plus limited uploads, images, voice, deep research, memory, and Codex.
  • Go: more messages, uploads, images, and memory, and voice with video. OpenAI notes this plan may include ads.
  • Plus: advanced reasoning models (GPT-6 Sol and Astra), expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex, and Office/Google Sheets extensions.
  • Pro: maximum memory and context (the pricing page lists a 400K reasoning context window on Pro vs. 256K on Plus), longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, and "Dot", an always-on agent.

Billing gotcha: OpenAI's help center says annual billing isn't available for Go, Plus, or Pro. You pay monthly.

Best for: people who want one assistant for writing, images, voice conversations, quick research, and some coding.

Claude: best for writing and coding work

Anthropic's consumer plans are simpler: Free, Pro, and Max.

  • Free is surprisingly capable: web search, creating files and running code, Artifacts, memory, connectors, and up to 5 projects. You get the Sonnet and Haiku models, but not Opus.
  • Pro costs $20 billed monthly, or $17/month on an annual plan ($200 upfront). It adds Claude Code, Research, Opus models, Projects, scheduled tasks, Claude in Chrome, and Claude for Microsoft 365.
  • Max starts at $100/month and gives 5x or 20x Pro usage, higher output limits, priority access at busy times, and $100–$200/month in API credits.

How usage limits work: Anthropic says every plan's limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on top for paid plans. Chat and Claude Code draw from the same pool. Pro gives at least 5x the Free plan's usage per session. When you hit the limit on a paid plan, you can switch on usage credits billed at API rates.

Best for: writers who work with long documents, developers who want Claude Code without a separate subscription, and anyone who wants to save by paying annually.

Perplexity: an answer engine with citations

Perplexity is built around search. Every answer cites its sources, which makes it the best fit of the three for research you need to check.

  • Free: access to top models with limited weekly usage.
  • Pro: raises all limits and adds Perplexity Computer (its agent), premium data sources such as PitchBook and Statista, file and app search, and the option to pick a preferred model per query. Perplexity's pricing hub shows $17/month for Pro (billed annually). Its launch blog post for Max describes Pro as $20/month. Check the current monthly price on the site.
  • Education Pro: $10/month with student verification through SheerID.
  • Max: $200/month or $2,000/year, with annual billing available only on the web app. It adds higher limits on deep research, file uploads, and video creation, plus Model Council runs.

Best for: students, analysts, journalists, and marketers who need sourced answers quickly.
