Verdict
ElevenLabs is the default AI voice platform for many creators, and for good reason. It offers a usable free tier, a cheap Starter plan that includes a commercial license and instant voice cloning, and a single credit pool that covers text-to-speech, transcription, sound effects, music, dubbing, and more. The catch is that credits are the real price. The plan sticker tells you little until you know how many credits your workflow uses. This guide explains that part.
Best for: YouTubers, podcasters, course creators, bloggers who want audio versions of posts, and indie developers building voice features. Not ideal for: anyone who needs a fixed, unlimited monthly allowance with no usage math, or who only needs a few minutes of voiceover a year (the free tier or a one-off tool may be enough).
What ElevenLabs is
ElevenLabs started as a text-to-speech company and is now a broad AI audio platform. Its pricing page groups products into ElevenCreative (tools for creators), ElevenAgents (conversational voice agents), and ElevenAPI (developer access). The creator plans covered here include:
- Text to Speech: turn scripts into narration. The plan comparison lists 74 languages for the Eleven v3 model.
- Speech to Text: transcription.
- Voice Changer and Voice Isolator: transform recorded speech, or strip background noise.
- Sound Effects and Music: generate audio assets. Music commercial use starts on Starter.
- Dubbing: automatic dubbing and the editable Dubbing Studio (Starter and up).
- Studio: long-form projects such as audiobooks and narrated articles.
- Voice cloning: Instant Voice Cloning from Starter, and higher-fidelity Professional Voice Cloning from Creator.
- Image & Video tools, from Starter.
The company recently introduced Eleven v4, which it calls its "most emotive model yet."

How credits actually work
All ElevenLabs products draw from one shared monthly credit pool. According to the pricing FAQ, approximate costs are:
- Text to Speech: about 1 credit per character on standard models. Some Flash/Turbo models cost 0.5–1 credit per character for API usage.
- Speech to Text: 330 credits per minute.
- Music: 900 credits per minute.
- Sound Effects: 200 credits per generation.
- Voice Changer / Voice Isolator: 1,000 credits per minute.
- Dubbing: 2,000 credits/minute (automatic, watermarked), 3,000 (automatic, no watermark), 5,000 (Dubbing Studio, watermarked), or 10,000 (Dubbing Studio, no watermark).
What that means in practice
ElevenLabs' comparison table puts the minutes of UI text-to-speech included at roughly 10 minutes on Free, 30 on Starter, 121 on Creator, and 600 on Pro. Extra minutes are priced from about $0.36 on Free down to about $0.17 on Pro and above.
Two quick examples using those figures:
- A blogger narrating posts. A 1,500-word article is roughly 9,000 characters, about 9,000 credits at 1 credit per character. Starter's 30,000 credits covers about three such articles a month. Creator's 121,000 covers about thirteen.
- A YouTuber with a 10-minute weekly voiceover. That's about 40 minutes a month, which is more than Starter includes, so Creator is the realistic plan.
Remember that transcription, sound effects, and dubbing draw from the same pool. If you dub a 10-minute video in Dubbing Studio without a watermark, that alone is 100,000 credits, almost the whole Creator allowance.
Rollover and cancellation rules
- Unused credits roll over for up to two months on paid plans, so your balance can reach up to 3× your monthly quota. This only applies while you keep an active subscription and don't downgrade or cancel.
- Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the billing cycle. Pay-as-you-go top-up credits are separate and not subject to the rollover cap.
- Upgrading carries unused credits into the next cycle.
- Credits are charged per generation, not per download. Some free regenerations may be offered when the content and settings don't change, and the interface tells you before you generate.
These rules reward steady monthly use. If your usage is spiky, consider a lower plan plus top-ups rather than a big plan you'll under-use.
Features that matter for creators
Commercial license from Starter. The Free plan doesn't list a commercial license. If you monetize YouTube videos, podcasts, or courses, budget for at least Starter.
Voice cloning. Instant Voice Cloning (Starter and up) works from a short sample. Professional Voice Cloning (Creator and up) is the higher-fidelity option for creators who want a consistent "AI version" of their own voice. Only clone voices you have the right to use: your own, or with documented consent.
Studio for long-form. Studio projects (3 on Free, 20 on Starter) suit audiobooks, narrated blog posts, and course modules where you need to edit long scripts in sections.
Audio quality. All plans list 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz output. Creator and above add 192 kbps, and Pro adds 44.1 kHz PCM/WAV output via the API.
Teams. Workspace seats and collaboration start at Scale ($299/month, 3 seats). Smaller teams sharing one account should read the terms carefully.
Pros
- A free tier that's genuinely usable for testing
- A low-cost Starter plan that already includes a commercial license and voice cloning
- One credit pool across many audio tools, so you don't need separate subscriptions for TTS, transcription, SFX, and dubbing
- Credit rollover (up to two months) on active paid plans
- A wide language range (74 languages listed for Eleven v3)
- Developer-friendly API options
Cons
- Credit math makes real costs hard to predict, especially if you mix dubbing or music with TTS
- Cancelling or downgrading forfeits unused credits
- Promotional first-month prices can make the regular cost look lower than it is
- Team seats only start at the $299 Scale plan
Alternatives
- Murf AI: a voiceover studio aimed at e-learning, ads, and presentations, with a pay-as-you-go API starting at $0.01 per 1,000 characters for its Falcon model. See the Murf AI directory entry.
- Descript: best if your main job is editing recorded podcasts or videos by editing a transcript, with AI voice as a supporting feature. See the Descript directory entry (paid plans from $16/person/month billed annually).
- Synthesia: if you need an on-screen AI presenter (avatar video), not just a voice.
